GRACE DENIS
During a two week mandate quarantine in a hotel at the Cayman Islands, artist Grace Denis (Los Angeles, 1990) found herself with the unique chance to develop ‘Quarantine Diary’, a study of the environment through the documentation of elements and specimens from the outside world. Thus, samples of sand, flowers, plants, dirt or ocean water were collected and delivered by external figures who became essential parties of the project, unintentionally fostering a heightened sense of attention to their peripheral surroundings. As the artist herself states, ‘Quarantine Diary’ reflects on the notion of time through organic material and its gradual degradation, therefore «illustrating time in its innately entropic state.»
Durante las dos semanas de cuarentena en un hotel de las Islas Caimán, la artista Grace Denis (Los Angeles, 1990) llevó a cabo la serie ‘Quarantine Diary’, un estudio del paisaje a modo de diario mediante la documentación de elementos del ámbito exterior vetado. De este modo, muestras de arena, flores, hojas, suciedad o agua del mar fueron recogidas y entregadas por figuras externas, convirtiéndolos así en agentes esenciales del proyecto. Como la propia artista afirma, ‘Quarantine Diary’ actúa como una reflexión sobre la noción del tiempo a través de material orgánico y de su paulatina descomposición, y un reflejo de la entropía inherente del mismo.
